Mohanakrishnan is the son of a well-known writer and dramatist. When he is in the seventh standard his father passes away. The following years were years of poverty and hardship. Mohanakrishnan manages to study up to plus two. After that he is forced to look for a job. He comes to the house of Rama Varma Thamburan with a letter of introduction from the noted poet Kaithapram. Rama Varma Thamburan is a disciple of Chembai Vaidhyanath Bhasgavathar; and though not as well known as his guru, he is a noted musician in his own right. Rama Varma Thamburan also owns a factory, but that has been locked out, and the family, though still maintaining the external appearance of wealth and prosperity is in reality in dire straits. Rama Varma Thamburan is not in a position to help Mohanakrishnan, but the latter is unable to return home without a job.
In the mean time Mohanakrishnan wins the affection of the two young daughters of Rama Varma Thamburan. Rather than giving him a suitable job in his factory, Rama Varma Thamburan asks Mohanakrishnan to assist the temple priest. In the meanwhile, Mohanakrishnan meets Satyabhama, who happens totake refuge in the temple premises (almost every night) in order to save herself from being harassed by her cousin Surendran. As time passes, Mohanakrishnan and Satyabhama fall in love which is opposed by the people around the temple and they attack the young couple. They manage to escape from the village though Surendran is still on the lookout for them.
One day, Surendran finally finds them, leading to a stand-off between Mohanakrishnan and the former. The movie ends on a tragic note with Mohanakrishnan killing Surendran in a fit of rage and is arrested by the police, while Satyabhama looks on helplessly.
Nivedhyam has several new-comers in the cast. Vinu Mohan, who makes his debut as Mohanakrishnan is quite good for a debutante in a role tailor made for him. The new girl Bhama as Satyabhama shines through in several emotional sequences demanded of her character, doing justice to her role. Bharath Gopi as Rama Varma Thamburan and Nedumudi Venu as the temple priest, both seasoned actors, excel in their roles. All the songs are melodious and have been picturized beautifully too, “Chittatinkaavil…” and “Odakuzal Viliketto…” being the most popular among them, which are in true Lohitha Das Style.
